@gaylasmith,

I was a little wary at first. But I've also heard that eating them during pregnancy could reduce the chances your baby will be allergic. I have no idea if it's true or how they would even test it but I've been fine.

I think it's best to avoid shelled peanuts because they can have a bacteria in them that may be harmful (it's toxic to pet birds but I'm not sure what the effects would be to us during pregnancy).

Although, I have noticed my tastes have changed. I prefer only salty nuts now. No honey roasted or anything like that.

I read a study that women who eat more nuts while pregnant are less likely to go into preterm labor.

It can go both ways. It can either increase the chance of an allergy developing or decrease it. It depends on how much you have. Like they say, everything is okay in small amounts (or however the real saying goes) lol. But if you overdo it, like peanuts daily that can definitely increase the chance of an allergy developing.

My mom had peanuts almost everyday when she was pregnant with my brothers. They both now have peanut allergies and one is a severe the other isn't as bad but he still can't have them. The allergy doctor and pediatrician said the reason they probably developed the allergy was due to how much of a peanut intake she had while pregnant. No one in my family has allergies other than my brothers.

@gaylasmith,

And just to be clear as long as you're not allergic then they're fine to eat. You can't give you baby an allergic reaction in the uterus.

@MarissaV,

Seriously? Is there medical data to back that up? I'm not trying to argue but I have NEVER heard that eating too much of one thing can cause your baby to have an allergy. I ate almonds and peanuts like crazy with my last son and he eats peanut butter with no reaction.

I loved peanut butter with my first. He is severly allergic to all nuts. He also was a preemie (not because of eating nuts :) ). If you like them eat them. They won't harm the baby.

@gaylasmith,

I have heard both ways but the most recent version says that if there is no known allergies in the family then eating them makes your child less likely to have a nut allergy.

@Sam_L_F,

I think this is so interesting- do you have a family history of nut allergies?

@gaylasmith,

I eat almonds and peanut butter all the time. I've also eaten trail mix that had mixed nuts in it, pecan pie, brownies with chopped walnut in them. My doctor never mentioned anything about not eating nuts. I think it will be fine.
